Tony Hunter, well known bassist from Lincoln Park, dies

He was 56.He was born Dec. 14, 1961. Mr. Hunter had lived in Lincoln Park for the past several years, but grew up in Southwest Detroit, which is now known as one of the hotbeds on the national music scene.Mr. Hunter was born in the Cass Corridor and later moved to Southwest Detroit where he was a football player. After playing with future NFL Pro Bowler Luis Sharpe at Southwestern High School, Mr. Hunter turned to his music career.He became known as a great bass player and often played on records and in various bands over the years.“I have had the pleasure of jamming with Tony Hunter,” Raul Saldivar Sr. said. “I will never forget when Tony called me ‘a cat.’ It meant so much to me. He was a great guy and musician.”Survivors include his wife Liza; parents Rosalind and Joe Turner; daughters Saveria and Skye; sons Anthony and Zakk; granddaughters Vanessa, Reanna and Ellie; grandson Tony; sister Kim; and brothers Steve, Shawn and Duane.A memorial gathering is set for 2 to 8 p.m. April 15 at The Allen Park Chapel of The Martenson Family of Funeral Homes, 10915 Allen Road. The service will take place at 4 p.m.He was cremated.
